I however, have always been inspired by people who buck the trends and go out on a limb, taking risks, chasing dreams etc. Sofia Kapiris did exactly that. At 23, she had started her own label, SCK by Sofia Kapiris. She now has a formidable brand, with her beautiful designs selling out on the regular.
She’s come far for a little girl with a simple passion for fashion. I mean, such a dream is common place amongst little girls these days. A lot of women, myself included, have been inspired by the fashion world from a young age only to dismiss any notion of pursuing a creative career either through the influence of conservative parents who limit creative inclinations to being expressed solely in the scope of a hobbie or through societal pressure.
You know you’ve proven the skeptics, the naysayers wrong however, when big names such as Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Karreuche are seen in your garments and advocating them via their huge social media reach.
And whilst having household names in your clothes is a sure fire way to grow a brand, Sofia has had to learn the ropes of the business world herself. With a following of over 128 K on Instagram alone, we can learn a thing or two about entrepreneurship from this lady.
‘I think the most important thing on social media is being yourself and being sure to differentiate yourself from other brands. My main tip for social media would be to stay focused on your own business. With so many brands on social media it is important to not worry about what they are doing because focusing on yourself is more valuable for you and your business’s growth. ‘
‘I absolutely love stretch fabric & so do our customers! However, SCK is a growing brand and is now focusing on introducing new fabrics. That being said, stretch fabric will always be the signature of SCK.’
The thing I loved about the brand and this material was that it catered to women who did not necessarily prescribe to generic fit model body types often utilised to chain produce garments for popular brands. Her dresses however, tend to focus on accentuating female shape and silhouettes of all types.
‘Like all women, we can be hard on ourselves and quite self conscious. I am only learning to love my ‘not so perfect body’ now. Since I have struggled with being body conscious, it has helped me understand how to create designs that are extremely flattering on thin women but also curvy women. I think about absolutely everything from where the slit sits to where the seams are. ‘
It is a very real issue in the fashion world where we are bombarded on the daily with the same portrayal of what it means to be beautiful, with an unashamed deliberate ignorance of the variety out there. But Sofia is a realist and perhaps her own struggles have made her sensitive to the reality of finding clothes that empower and allow a woman to feel confident and sexy.
‘SCK is for women who want to make a statement. It is extremely important to cater for women of all body shapes & backgrounds. It is equally as important to give those who feel like ‘they won’t look good in a SCK dress’ the confidence that they will. All body shapes & backgrounds are beautiful and I couldn’t imagine running a brand that only caters for a ‘specific’ type of woman.’
As for the future?
‘Oh there’s so much!’.
Sofia’s passion and motivation have made her seemingly unstoppable.
‘What I can tell you is SCK is bringing out the biggest collection yet for AW16. We are introducing new styles & 2 new fabrics. We have so many other big things happening this year which we can’t wait to announce! We always focus on how we can make SCK bigger & better every year! So definitely watch this space, because we are only just getting started!
