The further you digress down the highway away from infamous Cancun, the more removed you are from the stock standard imposed party atmos of third world countries. Tulum, is lined by a number of boutique and high end resorts and hotels each with their own slice of the best of the Riviera Maya coastline.
For me, booking into Nomade Tulum was an entirely exxy and self indulgent end to my backpacking heavy itinerary through Mexico and Cuba, and boy, I was ready for a bit more TLC, and sleeping in a non shared room sans snoring EtOH intoxicated 18 yr olds.
The general communal aesthetic of Nomade is next level boho, I’m not talking Mary Kate Olsen circa 2004, this is the very word personified. You will find this to be very much the underlying vibe of a lot of mexican towns with a heavy surf culture and immersion with and love for mother nature and the sea. The Mexicans do ecclectic interior design better than anything I have seen, more high end less uni student hipster wannabe vibes.
Nomade feels more like a community than a hotel per say, trying to reconnect you with your senses and your self, away from the literal and metaphorical noise. You wake up, perhaps decided to join in on the communal morning yoga. And after ward, make your way down to Macondo for a delightful fresh Mexican breakfast (inclusive in your stay price), seated with an amongst other guests in a space emblazoned with funky prints and colours. And then the rest of the day awaits sans pressure to leave the beautiful site. Where lying in a hammock by the beach, soaking up the Mayan rays, sipping on cocktails and feasting on fresh zesty bites from the onsite beachside restaurant ‘La Popular’ is a perfectly reasonable plan of action. There is a beautiful concept called the gratitude tent which may sound a bit idealistic but is a nice space to reflect, engage in group discussion, or simply read a book, or meditate.
There is no doubt you will be spoilt for choice when looking to stay in Tulum but the new-ish kid on the block does well to move away from the commercialised experiences trying to infiltrate this famous strip of beach. Where somehow, management have been able to rather beautifully and seamlessly integrate a stripped back yet luxurious experience all in one that is authentic to the Tulum way of life.
