Ever since I can remember, birthday’s have been a cause for celebration. My mum and dad always made me feel so loved every July. I particularly remember the excitement of going shopping with my mumma for my birthday outfit. Initially that meant a visit to Pumpkin Patch, then it was trying to be cool and trendy at Supré (hindsight tells me my fashion choices then were neither cool nor trendy), then Forever New closer to 16, Myer into early ‘adulthood’… The progression of my fashion choices every year is something I love looking back on.
I know people might perceive an interest and passion for fashion as superficial or vapid. But fashion for me is such a huge part of self expression, and I can remember exactly why I chose certain dresses or clothes, how I felt at the time, what and who was significant in my life at that point, my perception of myself. For 24, I guess I have never felt more comfortable in my own skin (give or take the few days before my period where I basically think I am a blue whale personified and will eat everything in my path).
I picked this dress from Meshki because it was not boisterous or loud, it was a simple design, and understated; the dress doesn’t need bright colours or patterns or crazy silhouettes to grab your attention. It’s a mother f***king black dress, it speaks for itself without ever needing to open it’s mouth. The bandage design is perfect for curvy girls like myself; it sort of works double time as spandex, sucking you in, whilst also accentuating your body in all the right areas.
